somewhere along the way, sharing online started to feel less like expressing myself and more like performing. every post needed a purpose, every photo needed to look polished, and every idea had to become “content.” i missed the quieter internet—the one where people made little websites simply because they wanted a place to collect their thoughts, interests, and everyday moments. helloitswinnie.com is my attempt to find my way back to that ♡
When sharing started to feel like performing
for a while, i felt like everything i shared needed to look a certain way before anyone would care about it. photos for my blog and instagram had to be carefully styled, beautifully lit, and consistent with whatever aesthetic i was trying to maintain. instead of simply capturing something i loved, i found myself arranging ordinary moments into something i hoped other people would like.
i still love photography and making beautiful things, but the pressure slowly changed my relationship with both. creating stopped feeling like a way to express myself and started feeling like a way to earn attention or approval. if a photo didn’t feel polished enough, i wouldn’t share it. if an idea didn’t fit the aesthetic, i assumed it didn’t belong. eventually, i realized i was spending so much time thinking about how my life looked online that there wasn’t much room left to share what it actually felt like.
What I missed about the old internet
what i missed most was the internet before every personal space began to feel like an aesthetic storefront. blogs used to be places where people shared unfinished thoughts, everyday updates, strange interests, and pieces of themselves that didn’t need to be polished or useful. you could visit someone’s site without immediately being asked to buy something, subscribe to something, or see them as a brand.
i missed tumblr before it started to feel so tame, when it was chaotic, deeply personal, and full of little communities you could stumble into. i missed customizing myspace pages and reading livejournal entries that felt like glimpses into someone else’s private world. those spaces could be messy and sometimes a little embarrassing, but that was also what made them feel alive.
most of all, i missed being able to write without expecting anyone to see it. there was something freeing about treating a website like a digital diary—leaving thoughts behind simply because i wanted somewhere to put them. maybe someone would find them and relate, or maybe they would sit quietly unread. either way, writing them still felt worthwhile.
Why I created Hello It’s Winnie
i created hello it’s winnie to be part digital diary and part home for everything that doesn’t quite belong on winnie x yong. i love my other blog, but it has its own purpose and a more polished way of presenting things. i wanted somewhere i could braindump, follow a random interest, or share a small piece of my life without worrying about whether it fit neatly into the space around it.
i was also inspired by personal blogs like heyshadylady—spaces where the person behind the website feels present and free to write about whatever matters to them. it reminded me that a blog doesn’t need a perfectly defined niche to be worth visiting. sometimes, wanting a place to write is reason enough to make one.
that’s what i want hello it’s winnie to be: a space where i don’t have to turn myself into a brand or make every thought presentable. i can write about a game i’m enjoying, something i’ve been struggling with, a strange internet rabbit hole, or whatever happens to be living in my head that day. it’s a place where i can simply be me.
What I want to share here
i want to share the cozy games i’m playing, interesting things i discover while wandering around the internet, and little updates about my life whenever i feel able to give them. i also want this to be somewhere i can write honestly about burnout, mental health, and the quieter parts of being a person—thoughts that don’t always fit on a cup of claritea, my substack, or anywhere else i create.
there probably won’t be a perfect theme tying everything together, and that’s intentional. some posts might be thoughtful and personal, while others might simply be a list of things i’m enjoying or something strange i found online. i want to give myself permission to follow my curiosity and write about whatever feels meaningful to me at the time. more than anything, i want this to be a home for the thoughts that might otherwise have nowhere to go.
Final Thoughts
i don’t know exactly what this little space will become, and i think i’d like to keep it that way. for now, i’m simply happy to have somewhere i can write freely, follow my curiosity, and leave small pieces of myself behind. whether you visit often or only happen to wander in from time to time, you’re always welcome here. i’m glad you found your way to my little corner of the internet ♡
