Reasons Why I Love Autumn And Winter

there is something about autumn and winter that makes the world feel a little softer. as the air grows cooler and the days become quieter, i find myself looking forward to cozy clothes, earlier evenings and the small comforts that feel especially lovely at this time of year. neither season is perfect, of course, but both give me permission to slow down, stay close to home and notice a different kind of beauty. from changing leaves to peaceful winter mornings, here are some of the reasons autumn and winter will always have a special place in my heart. 🍂❄️♡

the cooler weather

one of the biggest reasons i love autumn and winter is the cooler weather. after the heaviness of summer heat, that first crisp breeze feels like a relief. i can finally step outside without immediately feeling overheated, and even an ordinary walk feels more refreshing when the air has a little chill to it.

cooler days also mean returning to the clothes i feel most comfortable in: oversized hoodies, soft sweatpants and cozy layers. there is something especially comforting about getting dressed warmly before going outside, then coming home and settling beneath a blanket. the cold may not always be convenient, but i would choose crisp air over humid summer weather almost every time. 🍂❄️

my birthday is in autumn

autumn feels a little more special to me because it is also my birthday season. as the leaves begin to change and the weather finally cools down, there is a quiet sense of anticipation in the air. the season already feels like a transition, so having my birthday within it makes it feel like a personal new beginning too.

i love that my birthday arrives surrounded by crisp air, warm colors and the gradual return of all things cozy. even when i don’t have an elaborate celebration planned, the season itself makes the day feel a little more magical. 🍂🎂♡

New England autumns

New England feels like it was made for autumn. i love the thought of winding roads surrounded by red and golden leaves, historic towns decorated for the season and crisp afternoons spent wandering somewhere new. there is a storybook quality to it that makes me want to experience the region slowly, with plenty of time to notice the scenery and small-town details.

my trip to Boston and Salem gave me a glimpse of New England’s history, coastal beauty and cozy charm, which i wrote about in A Quiet New England Getaway: Boston & Salem on Winnie X Yong. now i can’t wait to return during autumn and explore even more of New England—especially the places where the foliage, old architecture and cooler weather all come together. 🍁♡

the changing foliage

one of the most beautiful parts of autumn is watching the trees slowly change color. ordinary streets and familiar places begin to look completely different beneath shades of gold, orange and deep red. the transformation doesn’t last forever, which somehow makes it feel even more special—there is only a small window to pause and enjoy it before the leaves fall.

i would especially love to experience autumn in Japan someday. Japan is already my favorite place i’ve travelled to, and seeing its temples, gardens and streets surrounded by colorful autumn trees would feel like discovering it all over again. photographs of the gorgeous red maples are beautiful, but i can only imagine what it would be like to stand beneath them in person. 🍁🇯🇵♡

holiday décor

i have such a soft spot for holiday décor. i love watching ordinary homes, shops and streets slowly transform with warm lights, wreaths, ornaments and little seasonal displays. even when i’m not doing anything particularly festive, seeing everything decorated makes the darker, colder part of the year feel brighter and more inviting.

holiday decorations also carry a comforting sense of nostalgia. unpacking familiar pieces can feel like greeting something you haven’t seen in a year, while discovering a new ornament or decoration adds another tiny memory to the collection. i may not need every cute seasonal thing i see, but that certainly doesn’t stop me from wanting to look at all of it. ✨🎄♡

Christmas markets

Christmas markets feel like one of the loveliest parts of the holiday season. i love the idea of wandering between little wooden stalls beneath twinkling lights, looking at handmade decorations and gifts while the air smells like warm pastries and seasonal treats. they seem to turn an ordinary shopping trip into something slower, cozier and much more memorable.

i would especially love to visit a European Christmas market someday. seeing a historic town square filled with lights, decorated trees and festive stalls feels like stepping into a storybook. i can imagine wrapping myself in my warmest coat, carrying a hot drink and taking far too many photographs of every beautiful detail. hopefully, one winter, i’ll finally get to experience that magic in person. 🎄✨♡

seeing the first snow

i love the way snow can transform an ordinary place overnight. rooftops, trees and quiet streets all look softer beneath a fresh white layer, and watching the flakes fall from somewhere warm feels wonderfully peaceful. the first snow of the season is especially magical before anyone has walked through it and the world still looks untouched.

my appreciation becomes slightly less enthusiastic when it is time to go outside and shovel it, though. snow is much easier to romanticize from behind a window with a blanket nearby than from the end of a heavy shovel. i may not enjoy the work that comes with it, but i’ll always have a soft spot for how beautiful it looks when it first begins to fall. ❄️♡

cute autumn home décor

autumn décor is undeniably cozy, although the traditional warm oranges, mustard yellows and deep browns aren’t always my style. i admire them in other spaces, but they don’t feel quite at home beside all the pink and softer colors i naturally gravitate toward.

that’s why i have such a soft spot for the occasional autumnal pink décor piece. a blush-colored pumpkin, rosy seasonal flowers or a little decoration that combines autumn with my usual aesthetic feels much more like me. i love that i can enjoy the season without completely changing my space or forcing myself to embrace colors i wouldn’t normally choose. autumn can be pink too. 🎀🍂♡

final thoughts

autumn and winter aren’t perfect seasons—snow eventually needs shoveling, the cold can become inconvenient and the beautiful foliage never lasts quite long enough. even so, i love the way these months encourage everything to feel a little slower and cozier. from crisp weather and changing leaves to festive lights, Christmas markets and the occasional pink pumpkin, there are so many small details to look forward to.

perhaps that is what i love most: both seasons make ordinary comforts feel special. an oversized hoodie feels cozier, a warm home feels more inviting and familiar places become new again beneath colorful leaves or fresh snow. autumn and winter remind me that there is beauty in change, quiet and slowing down. 🍂❄️♡
