i’ve been trying to think of a life update to share, but every time i sit down to write one, i realize i don’t really have an update. there are no exciting announcements, dramatic changes, or neatly packaged lessons waiting to be shared. life has simply been happening quietly in the background, with most days looking a lot like the ones before them.
part of me wondered whether that meant there was nothing worth writing about. but this is supposed to be my digital diary, and not every chapter of a diary needs a plot twist. sometimes the update is simply that i’m still here, moving through an ordinary and slightly uneventful season of life—and maybe that’s enough.
What my days actually look like
so, what has life actually looked like lately? mostly a collection of very ordinary days.
lately, my days have mostly been built around a few small routines. i’ve been playing a lot of tomodachi life: living the dream, checking in each day to see which new foods have arrived at fresh kingdom market and what clothes are waiting at where & wear. every so often, i remember to do my weekly check-in at t&c home reno to look through the new rooms. there’s something satisfying about popping in for a few minutes, seeing what has changed, and watching the little lives on my island continue to unfold.
when i’m not checking on my islanders, i’ve somehow found myself watching episode after episode of mayday: air disaster on youtube. it’s become one of those shows i can put on and immediately get absorbed in, even though an air-disaster documentary is a slightly strange companion to such a quiet stretch of life. so, for the most part, my days have been a mixture of virtual shopping trips, home renovations, and learning an alarming amount about aviation incidents.
How this uneventful season feels
if i’m being honest, this uneventful season has left me feeling a little stuck. without fully realizing it, i started comparing my quiet, ordinary life to the lives i was seeing other people share online. it seemed like everyone else was going out in los angeles, new york, or london—or disappearing for a dreamy euro summer—while i was still at home, moving through the same routines and checking on the same little island every day.
the more i watched, the easier it became to see my own life as boring or somehow behind. i know i’m comparing my everyday reality to carefully selected pieces of other people’s lives, but knowing that doesn’t always stop the feeling. sometimes it seems like everyone else is out in the world collecting new experiences while my life is paused somewhere in the background.
i don’t have a tidy lesson about how i stopped comparing or suddenly learned to appreciate this season, because i’m still in it. some days the quiet feels comfortable; on others, it feels like a reminder of everything i’m not doing. maybe part of this update is simply admitting that i feel stuck, even if i don’t yet know what comes next.
A Quiet Ending
i wish i could end this by saying that i’ve figured out how to feel less stuck, or that something exciting is waiting just around the corner. the truth is, i don’t know what comes next. life is quiet, my days are repetitive, and i’m still trying not to measure them against the lives i see other people living.
maybe i don’t need to turn this season into something more meaningful before i can write about it. nothing especially exciting has happened, and i don’t have a lesson to offer—but i’m still here, living these ordinary days and checking in when i can. for now, that’s the update ♡
